Q. What are waistbeads?

A. African women have traditionally worn waistbeads as a symbol of womanliness and prosperity for centuries. The history of waistbeads can be traced back as early as the 15th centuries.  African waistbeads were made popular by the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. They served as a rite of passage. It has been said that the weight and number of strands on your waist can help shape the waist. Some tribes also used waistbeads during naming ceremonies and to track babies growth. Traditionally waistbeads were worn underneath clothing and visible to only the woman’s husband or lover. Waist beads were a symbol of femininity and sexuality. When worn over their clothing they were seen as a sign of status. These beads are believed to possess the power to attract as well as evoke deep emotional responses. Adding ornaments, oils, and precious stones further aided in healing and drawing wealth.

Q.  How do I measure myself?

A. Always measure where you want your waistbeads to fall. Remove or lift an clothing before measuring. The tape measure should fit snugly around your waist but should not be tight or dig into your skin. Record the number where the end with zero meets the other end of the tape.

Q. Is it ok to get my waistbeads wet?
A. Yes, you can get your waistbeads wet. Normal activity like bathing, swimming, and working out are okay.

Q. Will my beads fade?
A. Virtuously Beaded invests a lot if time into research and development. Our goal is to always provide the highest quality.  While we aim to provide strands that can withstand time, waistbeads are subject to wear and tear due to body chemistry, sweat, level care, and the use of soaps and body lotions. Colors may fade but the love, time, and energy but into each strand never will.
